Applications
Recirculating chillers like the Spectra Physics 315A-1L are used to maintain stable coolant temperatures in continuous-wave and pulsed laser systems, where heat generated by the laser head, pump source, or optics must be removed to protect performance and component life. Spectra Physics — now part of MKS Instruments — was a leading manufacturer of scientific and industrial lasers, and their 315-series chillers were paired with ion lasers, Nd:YAG systems, and dye lasers commonly found in research labs, semiconductor inspection, and optical processing environments. The temperature interlock feature allows the chiller to trigger a laser interlock signal if coolant temperature goes out of range, protecting the laser from thermal damage. These compact, self-contained units circulate coolant through an external loop connecting to the laser's water-cooling inlet and outlet ports. They remain in use today wherever legacy Spectra Physics and compatible laser systems are still in service, as well as in labs that need a compact 115V chiller for other heat-generating instruments.
This Spectra Physics 315A-1L laser chiller has been pulled from a working environment where it was previously in use. It has not been powered up or tested at our facility. The unit is in good cosmetic shape overall — the white cabinet is clean with no significant damage visible. The front control panel, digital temperature controller, temperature interlock, and circuit breaker are all intact. The rear coolant supply and return fittings are present, and a red Duro Flex multipurpose hose is visible in the photos. The unit rolls on casters.
