Description
Philips CDD2000 SCSI External CD-R Drive CD Recorder Vintage Centronics 1994
The Philips CDD2000 is one of the earliest external CD recorders ever commercially released. Introduced around 1993–1994, it was among the first drives to bring CD recording out of the professional studio and into reach of prosumers and desktop workstation users. It connects via a 50-pin Centronics SCSI interface and uses a caddy-loading mechanism to accept recordable CD media.

Applications
The CDD2000 was a landmark product in the history of CD recording — Philips, as the co-inventor of the CD format alongside Sony, brought early CD-R technology to market well before CD burning became commonplace. In the mid-1990s, external SCSI CD recorders like the CDD2000 were used primarily by audio professionals for mastering and archiving, by publishers for CD-ROM premastering, and by early adopters in desktop publishing and data archival workflows. The SCSI interface made it compatible with both Mac and PC workstations of the era (PowerMac, Quadra, SGI, and high-end Windows PCs with SCSI host adapters), and the dual Centronics connectors allowed it to be daisy-chained with other SCSI peripherals. Today the CDD2000 is a sought-after piece of computing history — prized by vintage computer collectors, retro Mac enthusiasts, and early CD format historians. It was superseded by faster, cheaper CD-RW drives in the late 1990s, but remains a notable example of first-generation consumer CD recording technology.
This Philips CDD2000 external SCSI CD-R drive has been pulled from a working environment where it was previously in use. It has not been powered up or tested at our facility. The unit appears to be in good cosmetic condition overall — the beige enclosure is clean with no significant damage visible. The rear panel shows the dual 50-pin Centronics SCSI connectors and IEC power inlet intact. Please review all photos carefully and contact us with any questions before purchasing.
