Applications
The Novell LNalyzer was a specialized network analysis tool from the early 1990s, designed to capture and decode packets on Novell NetWare IPX/SPX networks. It was used by network administrators and field engineers to troubleshoot Novell NetWare LANs — identifying broadcast storms, protocol errors, collisions, and connectivity problems in real time. The lunchbox form factor was specifically chosen so a technician could carry the unit directly to the wiring closet or the problem node rather than being tied to a desk. It accepted ISA network interface cards (typically Novell-compatible Ethernet or Token Ring adapters) in its expansion slots, turning it into a self-contained capture and analysis station. This class of dedicated hardware LAN analyzer was common in the late 1980s through mid-1990s, before software-based analyzers running on standard Windows PCs (such as Novell's own later ManageWise and third-party tools like Network Associates Sniffer) displaced the purpose-built hardware approach. Today the LNalyzer is a collectible piece of early LAN networking history, of interest to vintage computing collectors, Novell NetWare enthusiasts, and technology historians.
This Novell LNalyzer BSI 386DX-33 portable lunchbox PC has been inspected and powers on — the built-in CRT monitor displays a DOS boot screen as shown in our photos. The unit has no operating system installed on the 120 MB hard drive. The plastic housing shows the yellowing typical of cream-colored computers from this era, and the metal panel surrounding the rear power inlet has visible grime and surface discoloration. The floppy drive bays, expansion ports, and front-panel controls all appear intact. Please view our photo set and contact us if you have any questions.
