Applications
The Nikon Optiphot series was Nikon's flagship line of industrial and research-grade upright reflected-light microscopes, produced primarily from the late 1970s through the 1990s. These instruments were designed for examining opaque specimens — semiconductor wafers, metal surfaces, ceramics, printed circuit boards, and other materials that require top (epi) illumination rather than transmitted light. The BF/DF capability allows users to switch between brightfield illumination (standard surface imaging) and darkfield illumination (which highlights surface features, scratches, and fine topography with high contrast) by simply pushing or pulling the illuminator slider. The DIC (Differential Interference Contrast) M Plan objectives add the ability to reveal subtle height differences and surface relief on polished or etched specimens without staining. The PFX photo attachment allowed direct 35mm film photomicrography. The Optiphot remains a sought-after platform for semiconductor QC labs, failure analysis, materials science departments, and university research facilities maintaining legacy inspection workflows. Working Optiphot systems and their M Plan DIC objective sets continue to hold value as parts sources for laboratories with existing Nikon Optiphot infrastructure.
This Nikon Optiphot Trinocular Metallurgical Microscope is being sold AS-IS and was partially tested by our technician. The external lamp housing is cosmetically broken but does power up. The PFX photo unit is functional, with the exception of a disconnected cable release; the ground glass sheet film holder is also broken and the back is missing. The binocular viewing head is present but the eyepieces are missing and the attachment is broken. On the positive side, the optics in all three M Plan DIC objectives and the photo viewing unit are clean and clear, the stand is structurally sound, and all focusing knobs turn smoothly. This unit is sold strictly for parts or repair and carries no functionality guarantee. Local preview is available at our facility in Ventura, California.
