Description
Intel UPP 103 Universal PROM Programmer MDS 225 201 730 220 ICE-85B System
This is a rare, complete Intel Microcomputer Development System (MDS) centered on the UPP 103 Universal PROM Programmer — an authentic piece of early microcomputer history dating from Intel's Santa Clara facility between 1975 and 1980. The system includes all major components: the UPP 103 programmer, MDS 225 monitor, MDS 730 dual 8-inch floppy controller, MDS 201 system controller, MDS 220 keyboard, and the ICE-85B in-circuit emulator chip module. All units are housed in Intel's distinctive teal/turquoise steel enclosures of the era.

Applications
The Intel MDS (Microcomputer Development System) was the professional workstation Intel sold to engineers developing software and hardware for its 8-bit microprocessors — primarily the 8080 and 8085 families. In the mid-to-late 1970s, this was the standard tool for writing, assembling, and debugging 8080/8085 code and for burning that code into EPROMs and PROMs via the UPP 103 programmer. The ICE-85B module allowed real-time in-circuit emulation of the 8085, letting engineers run their target hardware with the MDS acting as the processor — a groundbreaking capability at the time. The dual 8-inch floppy drives running Intel's ISIS-II operating system held the assembler, linker, and object files. These systems were used extensively in industrial control, telecommunications, and early embedded computing throughout the late 1970s. Today the Intel MDS is a highly sought collector's item among vintage computing enthusiasts and institutions documenting the origins of the microprocessor industry — this is the era when Intel's own engineers used this exact hardware to build the tools that launched the PC age.
This Intel UPP 103 Universal PROM Programmer system has not been powered up or tested at our facility. The system is in good physical condition overall, with the teal enclosures intact on all units. The UPP 103 programmer itself shows some surface wear and staining on the front panel, visible in our photos. The programmer, controller (MDS 201), and ICE-85B chip module contain Intel-manufactured boards dating from 1975 through 1980. This is a collector's piece sold as-is, untested.
