Description

Intel 486SX 33MHz Processor A80486SX-33 SX797 Socket 3 CPU i486SX

The Intel A80486SX-33 is a 33 MHz 486SX-class processor in a ceramic PGA package, identified by the SX797 stepping code. The 486SX is a variant of Intel's i486 architecture with the floating-point unit (FPU/math coprocessor) disabled, running at 33 MHz on a 32-bit internal data bus. It is designed for Socket 3 (168-pin PGA) motherboards and is fully compatible with the 487SX math coprocessor socket upgrade.

Applications

The Intel 486SX family was the mainstream desktop and workstation processor of the early 1990s, powering a wide range of IBM-compatible PCs running MS-DOS, Windows 3.x, and early Windows 95 systems. The 33 MHz 486SX was a common mid-range option during this era, used in both consumer and business desktops on Socket 3 motherboards from manufacturers such as ASUS, Gigabyte, AMI, and Award BIOS-based OEM boards. Today these processors are sought by vintage computer collectors and enthusiasts restoring or building period-accurate 486-era machines. The SX797 stepping is a well-known revision of the A80486SX-33, and collectors often search by S-spec when sourcing spares or upgrade chips for legacy systems.
