Applications
The IBM PS/2 Model 56 was part of IBM's Personal System/2 line, introduced in the late 1980s and continuing into the early 1990s. The PS/2 line replaced the earlier PC/XT and AT-class machines and introduced the Micro Channel Architecture (MCA) bus, a 32-bit proprietary expansion bus designed to improve data throughput over the older ISA bus. MCA was used across IBM's mid-range PS/2 desktop and server offerings and supported features like bus mastering and automatic slot configuration. The Model 56 was positioned as a mid-range business workstation, used primarily in corporate and institutional environments running IBM OS/2, DOS, and early Windows. The 486SLC2 processor was IBM's own hybrid chip combining elements of the Intel 486 architecture with an internal clock doubler. Today these machines are primarily sought by vintage computer collectors and restoration hobbyists, as well as anyone maintaining legacy IBM PS/2 installations that require spare parts, boards, or MCA cards.
This IBM PS/2 Model 56 9556-0BA 486SLC2 Desktop Computer has a bad power supply and could not be powered on or tested. It is being sold AS-IS for parts or repair only and is not guaranteed functional. The chassis is intact and appears complete based on photos — the system board, MCA expansion slots, 3.5-inch floppy drive, and hard drive are all visible inside. Cosmetically the case shows minor yellowing and light surface wear typical of this era. Please review all photos carefully and contact us with any questions before purchasing.
