Description

IBM 6770 Wheelwriter System/40 Word Processor Typewriter w/ Textpack A 1340709

The IBM 6770 Wheelwriter System/40 is a mid-1980s electronic daisy-wheel word processor typewriter combining a full typewriter mechanism with an integrated single-line LCD display, dedicated word processing keyboard, and a program cartridge slot. It is one of IBM's more capable Wheelwriter-series machines, designed to bridge traditional electric typewriter use with basic word processing functions such as text editing, format storage, and automatic correction — all without a separate computer.

Applications

The IBM Wheelwriter System/40 was positioned as an office word processor for secretarial and administrative use in the mid-to-late 1980s, at a time when dedicated word processors were displacing traditional electric typewriters but personal computers had not yet fully taken over office typing. The System/40 designation referred to the 40-character display that allowed operators to compose, review, and edit a line of text before committing it to paper — a significant productivity advantage over non-display typewriters of the era. The daisy wheel mechanism produced letter-quality output comparable to IBM's iconic Selectric, and the Textpack cartridge system allowed users to load word processing software directly into the machine. Today these machines are sought by vintage office equipment collectors, typewriter enthusiasts, historical computing hobbyists, and prop houses looking for authentic 1980s office environments. Ribbons and printwheels for the Wheelwriter series remain available from specialty suppliers.

Condition: Used
This IBM 6770 Wheelwriter System/40 word processor typewriter is in good used condition and was operational when removed from service. The display functions, keys respond normally, the print head carriage travels smoothly across the full width, and the paper feed system works well. No ribbon is included — you will need to source one separately. There is a broken tab on the battery cover, which prevents the cover from staying closed on its own; this is visible in the photos. The IBM Textpack A software cartridge (P/N 1340709, Version 1.30, for the Wheelwriter/Quietwriter System 6770/6780) is included. The unit shows normal age-related wear consistent with mid-1980s office equipment. Please view our photo set and contact us if you have any questions.
