Description
IBM 41H8874 41H8862 PCI Token Ring Network Card 16/4 Mbps RJ-45 DB9 85H3016
The IBM 41H8874 is a PCI Token Ring network interface card supporting both 16 Mbps and 4 Mbps ring speeds with auto-sensing. It connects to Token Ring networks via an RJ-45 (UTP) port and a DB9 (STP) port on the bracket, and interfaces to the host system over a standard PCI bus. The board carries IBM FRU number 41H8874, board part number 41H8862, and uses an IBM 85H3016 main controller chip manufactured in Japan.

Applications
Token Ring was IBM's proprietary LAN technology, introduced in the mid-1980s, and was widely deployed in IBM and IBM-compatible corporate networks through the 1990s. Unlike Ethernet's collision-based CSMA/CD access method, Token Ring uses a deterministic token-passing scheme on a logical ring topology, which gave it predictable latency characteristics valued in time-sensitive enterprise environments. The 41H8874 is a PCI-bus iteration of IBM's Token Ring adapter line, designed for PC/AT-compatible desktop and workstation systems. These cards were commonly used in corporate networks running IBM OS/2, Windows NT, and DOS-based clients connecting to IBM mainframes, AS/400 systems, and Token Ring-attached servers. By the late 1990s and early 2000s, Ethernet displaced Token Ring in most environments; today these adapters are primarily sought by organizations maintaining legacy IBM network infrastructure, IT historians, and collectors of vintage IBM networking hardware.
This IBM 41H8874 PCI Token Ring Network Card has been visually inspected and appears to be in good used condition. It was pulled from a working environment where it was previously in service. The PCB is clean with no cracked traces or damaged components visible. The bracket, DB9 port, and RJ-45 connector all appear intact and undamaged. It has not been bench-tested at our facility.
