Description
IBM 1389160 Model M 122-Key Terminal Keyboard 5-Pin DIN Buckling Spring 1985
The IBM 1389160 is a 122-key Model M terminal keyboard built for IBM's 3270 and 5250 series terminal systems. It uses IBM's legendary buckling spring switch mechanism, which produces the distinctive tactile bump and audible click that Model M keyboards are known for. The keyboard connects via a 5-pin DIN coiled cable and includes an 8-position DIP switch bank on the underside for terminal configuration.

Applications
The IBM Model M 122-key terminal keyboard was designed for use with IBM's 3270 and 5250 family of display terminals, which were the standard workstation interface for IBM mainframe (System/370, 3090) and IBM midrange systems (AS/400, System/36, System/38) from the mid-1980s onward. The 122-key layout — distinguished from the more common 101/104-key PC keyboard by its double row of 24 programmable function keys — was purpose-built for data entry operators running host-based applications where PF keys mapped to specific application functions. Today these keyboards are sought after by collectors of vintage IBM hardware, by enthusiasts who prize the buckling spring mechanism's typing feel, and by legacy operations still running terminal emulation software (such as IBM Personal Communications or TN3270 emulators) that can map the PF key layout. The 5-pin DIN connector was IBM's standard terminal keyboard interface during this era, predating the PS/2 connector that would follow in the late 1980s.
This IBM 1389160 Model M 122-Key Terminal Keyboard is being sold AS-IS because it requires a compatible IBM terminal system to test — hardware we do not have on hand. It came out of a working environment and appears to be in good physical condition, though we have not been able to power or test it at our facility. The underside shows some grime and wear consistent with age and use; the keycaps and case are otherwise intact. No manual or peripherals are included — keyboard only.
