Applications
Traveling wave tube amplifiers in the C-Band uplink range (5.925–6.425 GHz) are used in fixed satellite service (FSS) earth station transmit chains. The TWTA is the primary high-power amplification stage between the upconverter output and the antenna feed, taking a low-level modulated IF/RF signal and amplifying it to the power level needed to drive a parabolic dish antenna and maintain a reliable link budget to a geostationary satellite. Hughes Aircraft's Electron Dynamics Division was a leading TWT and TWTA manufacturer from the 1960s through the 1980s, supplying amplifiers for commercial broadcast, telecommunications, and government satellite ground stations. C-Band satellite communication was the dominant commercial satellite band throughout the 1970s and 1980s, used extensively for television distribution, telephony backhaul, and VSAT data networks. These amplifiers were typically deployed in outdoor antenna-mounted or indoor rack-mounted configurations at teleport facilities, broadcast uplink sites, corporate VSAT hubs, and military satellite terminals. C-Band earth station infrastructure continues to be maintained and operated at many facilities today, and Hughes TWTAs from this era remain in active service as well as sought after for spares and repairs.
This Hughes 9040H02R002 C-Band Traveling Wave Tube Amplifier has been visually inspected and appears to be in good used condition. It has not been powered up or bench-tested at our facility. The chassis and panels show normal wear consistent with prior service use, and the front-panel controls, indicators, and connectors appear intact. The internal TWT tube (670 HA, mfg. 1984) and associated circuitry are visible in our photos and appear undisturbed.
