The Gilson 506C System Interface Module connects a host computer to Gilson laboratory instruments via the Gilson Serial Input/Output Channel (GSIOC). It performs bidirectional signal conversion between the RS-232 levels used by computers and the RS-422/485 levels required by GSIOC, enabling coordinated control of multiple Gilson devices from a single workstation. The security key required to operate most Gilson software is not included with this unit.

Applications
The Gilson 506C was designed as the central communications hub in a Gilson HPLC or liquid-handling system, bridging a PC running Gilson control software (such as Unipoint or 712) to instruments like pumps, UV detectors, fraction collectors, and autosamplers — all of which communicate over GSIOC. The four analog inputs allow the computer to read voltage signals from detectors or monitors outputting in the −100 mV to +1.0 V range, while the six contact outputs let software trigger or control relay-based instruments that do not have native GSIOC capability. The 506C dates from Gilson's late-1980s through 1990s instrument lineup, during which GSIOC became the standard communication protocol across Gilson's analytical instrument family. These modules are still actively sought by labs maintaining legacy Gilson HPLC systems, as the 506C remains the required interface for running older Gilson instruments under PC control. It is also used in research and teaching labs that rely on established, proven Gilson setups and need a replacement or spare interface unit.
