The Dell PowerVault 220S is an external 3U rackmount SCSI storage enclosure designed to expand direct-attached storage capacity for Dell PowerEdge servers and other SCSI-capable hosts. This unit comes populated with 12 Fujitsu MAS3367NC 36GB 15K RPM Ultra320 SCSI hard drives in Dell drive sleds, out of a total capacity of 14 bays. All hard drives have been tested, formatted, and wiped — all previous data has been securely erased.

Applications

The Dell PowerVault 220S was part of Dell's PowerVault direct-attached storage (DAS) line, introduced in the early 2000s alongside the PowerEdge server family. It was designed primarily as a JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks) expansion shelf, connecting to a host server via an Ultra320 SCSI host bus adapter (HBA) to extend raw storage capacity in environments where the server's internal bays were insufficient. Typical deployments included small-to-medium business file servers, database storage, and backup target arrays in rack-mounted data center configurations. The 220S supported hot-swap drive replacement, dual redundant power supplies, and enclosure management through its EMM modules, making it suitable for environments requiring continuous uptime. Ultra320 SCSI was the high-performance SCSI standard of its era, offering up to 320 MB/s sustained throughput — well-matched to the 15K RPM Fujitsu drives in this unit.
