Brown & Sharpe 583 Hite-Set Precision Height Tool Setter Presetter Micrometer
The Brown & Sharpe 583 Hite-Set is a precision height tool setter designed for presetting cutting tool heights in machine shop and toolroom applications. It consists of a stable cast iron base, a graduated vertical column, and a precision micrometer drum head that allows tools to be set to an exact height before mounting in a machine. The instrument was manufactured in Providence, Rhode Island by Brown & Sharpe — one of the most respected names in American precision measurement.

Applications
The Hite-Set is a classic American toolroom instrument used to preset the height of boring bars, milling cutters, lathe tools, and other cutting tools before they are loaded into the machine. By transferring a precise height setting from the Hite-Set to the tool, machinists can reduce setup time and improve first-part accuracy without indicating off the machine spindle. Brown & Sharpe introduced the Hite-Set in the 1950s (Patent No. 2,766,531 was granted in 1956), and it became a standard fixture in American job shops, tool-and-die rooms, and production machine shops through the 1960s and 1970s. These instruments are still valued today by machinists working with older manual equipment and by collectors of American precision tooling. They are commonly used with boring head setups, indexable face mills, and any tooling where a known height or projection is required before cutting.
This Brown & Sharpe 583 Hite-Set precision height tool setter has been inspected and appears to be in good used condition. The cast iron base, column, and micrometer head are all intact. The green enamel on the base and column shows normal scuffing and paint wear consistent with shop use. The micrometer drum and graduated scales are clean and legible. The spindle and knurled locking collar are present and undamaged. It was pulled from a working machine shop environment. Please view our photo set and contact us if you have any questions.
