Applications
The Mac Pro 1,1 was Apple's entry into the Intel workstation market, replacing the PowerPC-based Power Mac G5. It targeted professional creative users — video editors, audio engineers, 3D artists, and software developers — who needed more computing headroom than the iMac or Mac Mini could provide. The tool-free chassis design allowed quick access to drive bays, RAM slots (up to 16GB with the right FB-DIMM modules), and PCIe expansion slots, making it popular for custom configurations. Today, these first-generation Mac Pros are used as legacy Mac workstations, as test and development machines for older macOS environments, or repurposed as file servers and media centers. Note that macOS support for the Mac Pro 1,1 ended with OS X 10.7 Lion natively, though community firmware workarounds exist for later OS versions.
