Applications
The Acer Model 2400 is a product of the early-to-mid 1980s era of personal computing, when 2400 baud external modems were standard equipment for dial-up connectivity on IBM PC, XT, and AT-class systems as well as compatible machines. Modems of this type connected computers to bulletin board systems (BBS), early online services such as CompuServe and The Source, and dial-up data networks using the Hayes AT command set. The RS-232C DB25 interface was the universal PC serial standard of the period, and the separate PHONE jack allowed the telephone handset to share the same line. Today these units are collected as vintage computing hardware and are occasionally still used in legacy industrial or telecom environments that retain dial-up serial communication requirements.
This Acer Technologies Corp. Model 2400 External Modem is in used condition. The housing shows yellowing and some surface soiling typical of its age, and there is sticker residue on the top cover. The rear-panel connectors — RS-232C DB25, and both RJ-11 PHONE and LINE jacks — appear intact. The unit has not been powered up or tested at our facility, but it was pulled from a working environment where it was previously in use.
