Applications

The Califone 1010AV was a standard piece of audio equipment in American schools and libraries from the 1960s through the 1980s, built specifically for institutional portability — a teacher could carry it between classrooms like a briefcase. The five-speed selector made it compatible with the full range of vinyl formats in circulation: 78 RPM shellac records from the pre-LP era, standard 33⅓ LP albums, 45 RPM singles, and the slower 16⅔ RPM transcription and language-lab discs used in educational settings. Today, units like this are sought after by collectors and enthusiasts who want a self-contained, portable way to play vintage 78 RPM records that most modern turntables cannot handle, as well as by schools and organizations that still maintain vinyl libraries. The sapphire stylus, two-position tonearm, and built-in amplification mean the unit requires no additional components to operate.
