Applications
The lunchbox or luggable form factor was a practical solution for portable computing in the late 1980s and early 1990s, bridging the gap between full desktop towers and the lighter but more expensive laptop computers of the era. Unlike true laptops, lunchbox portables offered near-desktop-class expandability — full-height expansion slots, standard drive bays, and real keyboards — in a chassis that could be carried by hand from job site to job site. The 80386 processor was the mainstream workhorse CPU of the early 1990s, capable of running DOS, early Windows (3.x), and a wide range of period business and technical software. Machines like the Portable PC III were used by field engineers, military contractors, and businesses that needed a complete computing environment on the move. Today, 80386 lunchbox portables are sought-after by vintage computing collectors and retrocomputing enthusiasts, prized for their distinctive form factor and their place in the history of portable computing. This unit dates from approximately 1994 based on its BIOS date.
This Portable PC III 80386 Lunchbox Portable Computer has been tested and boots to the BIOS/POST screen. The 1.44MB floppy drive has not been tested separately. There is no operating system installed — the hard drive is bare and will require OS installation before use. The built-in amber monochrome CRT monitor has a slight phosphor burn-in, which is visible on the screen and shown clearly in the photos. The unit is being sold as-is with these known conditions disclosed. It shows typical cosmetic wear for its era — light yellowing of the beige plastic, consistent with a mid-1990s machine. The detachable keyboard and its stowable cable are included. Please view our photo set and contact us if you have any questions.
