Applications
The Cisco 4000 series router belongs to the IGS (Internet Gateway Server) line, which Cisco introduced in the late 1980s and early 1990s as one of its early commercial multiprotocol routing platforms. These routers were widely deployed in enterprise and campus networks to interconnect Ethernet LANs over serial WAN links using protocols such as IP, IPX, DECnet, and AppleTalk. The IGS-R variant added bridging capability, allowing it to transparently bridge traffic between segments in addition to routing. By the mid-1990s the IGS line was superseded by the Cisco 2500 and 2600 series, but the 4000/IGS platform remains notable as an early example of Cisco's core routing architecture and is occasionally sought by collectors of vintage networking hardware or for use in legacy lab environments reproducing period network topologies.
This Cisco 4000 IGS-R Multiprotocol Router/Bridge has been pulled from a working environment where it was previously in service. It has not been powered up or tested at our facility. The unit appears to be in good cosmetic condition — the beige desktop housing is clean with no visible cracks or major damage, and the rear-panel ports and connectors look intact. Normal light wear consistent with office/network rack use. Please view our photo set and contact us if you have any questions.
